Christmas at Bedgebury illuminated trail returns for a second year

Bedgebury Pinetum's illuminated festive trail is back for a second Christmas from this weekend and it has new features.

The Goudhurst Forestry England trail wowed visitors last year with its mile-long lights trail. This year the trail, which runs from Friday, November 22 to Monday, December 30, has a Vortex Tunnel illuminated by tens of thousands of LED light globes; a flotilla of illuminated origami boats dancing on the shimmering lake and a water fountain finale jumping jets of light dancing in time to much-loved Christmas classics.

The ticket-only event also has the Tunnel of Light made up of thousands of twinkling pea-sized lights and attractions including spiced cider, mulled wine and hot chocolate, the chance to toast marshmallows on a fire and some traditional Victorian fairground rides charged separately. There may even be a chance to see Father Christmas and his elves.

Tunbridge Wells-based light sculpture artist Jon Owens is creating a 3m by 3m new festive installation for the trail. Rudolph Nose the Way will be an illuminated red nose and antlers suspended from two Scots pine trees, leading visitors through the darkness, highlighting the architecture and silhouettes of the trees around the edge of Marshal’s Lake.

He is also working on new work for Kew Gardens and Blenheim Palace.

Jon said: “The inspiration for the piece was my childhood imagination of Rudolph lighting the way for Santa on dark, stormy Christmas nights.
