No family needs telling how costly the summer holidays can be. But after amusing the kids at home for so many months during lockdown, to find the cash for a summer of activities may be more of a struggle than normal.

Here are some suggestions for a day out in Kent that might not break the bank...

Meerkats at the Fenn Bell Inn

1. The Fenn Bell Inn Conservation Project, Rochester

A fascinating collection of animals now call the Fenn Bell Inn their home in Medway.

Meercats, otters, birds of prey, lemurs and racoons are amongst the residents at this unique attraction in Hoo. Since reopening after lockdown, families must book ahead, choosing between either a 10am until 1pm slot or 2pm to 5pm to come along and see the animals in their enclosures.

The charity farm is now reopen following an uncertain few months because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Curly’s Farm in Bay View, on Sheppey, was set up by dads Kyle and Garry Ratcliffe, who had their home in Brambledown transformed by the BBC’s DIY SOS team in 2016. The pair were forced to write a pleading letter to Boris Johnson in June asking when they could reopen their small attraction as they struggled to meet the costly demands with no visitors.

The attraction, which is home to pigs, sheep, ducks, chickens and alpacas to name but a few, is now running pre-booked socially distanced farm tours for families/support bubbles where youngsters can meet and feed the animals and take a gentle wander across the site. There are numerous handwashing and hand sanitising stations available and everyone is asked to adhere to the government guidelines.

Admission prices are just £1 over a fiver for adults at £6 each but the first child is £4 and all other children after that just £2 - enabling a small family to visit for less than £20.
