Folkestone is getting ready for its most colourful - and wettest - weekend of the year.

The annual Folkestone Trawler Race returns to the seaside town this Saturday and Sunday.

The aim of the weekend is to highlight the town’s fishing heritage and supporting local fishermen. Lifeboats, live music, National CoastWatch and food stalls will be on offer throughout.

The free fun runs from 10am on Saturday through to 6pm on Sunday.

Last year’s winners included Barmy Army taking the title as the fastest boat, Viking Princess won best-dressed boat while The Valentine was crowned best-dressed crew.

The same prizes will be awarded again this year but this time the race will feature motor boats racing alongside the fishing vessels. Racing starts around 1.30pm on Saturday.

Sunday will see the return of the hilarious raft race as crews try to get across the harbour in the fastest times. The race begins at 2pm with judging starting at midday for the Mison’s Annual Fish Pie competition opposite The Mariners pub on The Stade.

Alongside the fun on the water, there will be loads of entertainment on the shore including fairground rides, arts and crafts, displays about Folkestone’s maritime heritage.

Live music will be playing into the evening on Saturday and returning on Sunday afternoon. Plus there will be lots of opportunities to buy fresh fish and local produce.

Entry for the fish pie competition costs £3 with money raised going to the National CoastWatch Institution which is based up on the East Cliff.
