Police figures on weapons found in Kent schools

Police have seized 110 offensive weapons at primary and secondary schools across Kent.

A taser, which can deliver a shock of up to 50,000 volts, knives and air guns are among the items to have been confiscated in the last three years.

Schools in Medway topped the chat with 24 weapons found, followed by Shepway with 13, while 11 were seized in Maidstone, according to figures obtained via a Freedom of Information request by My Kent Family's sister television station KMTV.

Police said they are working schools to try and reduce offences involving weapons.

"One report is too many and we work closely with both schools and pupils to provide information and advice around the risk of carrying weapons, whether that be taking an item into an educational environment or just generally carrying items in public," said a spokesman.

"It is both dangerous and illegal and puts others, as well as those who carry such weapons, at risk of potentially serious injuries."

Stephen Gray, who runs the Young Lives Foundation in Maidstone, spoke to KMTV's Harry Peet about what more needs to be done.
