The Charlie O'Brien blog: My gender reveal video

by Charlie O'Brien

So our gender scan at 16 weeks revealed we are having a baby girl!

To be honest – I have never imagined myself with a girl.

I have four younger brothers, two nephews and my two-year-old son, Noah.

Growing up my life was power rangers, football, fighting and dirty socks. All sounds terribly sexist and cliché doesn’t it? But true.

We would have been utterly over the moon to have another boy, but knowing we won’t be having any more children after this – having a girl does feel rather special.

So, here are 10 reasons I’m excited to be having a girl...

  1. I can buy baby clothes in the section of the shop that has 25 rails to choose from instead of two. Yes two. Seriously retailers – is it SO hard to come up with clothes for boys?!
  2. I WILL receive cards on my birthday, Mother’s Day, Christmas and maybe even Easter. (My brothers do not understand the importance of a lovely card or special occasions.)
  3. I get to be Mother of the Bride. Hopefully.
  4. I will be looked after financially in old age. Yep, a study in 2012 found that 67% of baby boomer women give their parents financial support, compared with 62% of baby boomer men.
  5. I will have someone to go shopping with. Yep – major gender stereotype right there, but I’m holding out hope. My husband HATES shopping and Noah is already freaking out when I take him into Boots – so I’m pinning all my hopes on this girl!
  6. I have someone to pass all my vacuous but very important wisdom on to – the best and worst shoes to wear on a night out, why you should ALWAYS take your make up off before bed, only ever get your eyebrows done professionally – I’ve learned most things the hard way.
  7. I will be 10 steps ahead of her every step of the way when she’s a difficult teenager. Nicking booze from the stash in the shed. Done that. Lied about where I’m staying overnight – yeah may have done that too.
  8. Girls smell nicer. Fact. No point arguing with me on this one – I have four brothers, therefore I am more than qualified on this point.
  9. Finally someone in my house may want to have a good old gossip with me. In fairness Noah’s not old enough to gossip yet, but in my experience girls are much better for a good chat!
  10. I have someone to pass my wedding veil on to.
