Charlie O'Brien: Enhanced scan confirms I'm pregnant with my second child

by Charlie O'Brien

So after three looooong months, a lot of pills swallowed and injections suffered (more in a later blog) and having to crop my growing body out of pictures for social media – I can now tell you that I’m pregnant with my second child!

Thirteen weeks and three days to be precise.

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have what’s called an ‘enhanced scan’ at the Fetal Medicine Research Institute in London. It’s a much longer more detailed scan now offered as a choice on the NHS some areas. I also had some blood tests to check whether the baby was likely to have Down’s Syndrome.

Confirmation of my good news

It was such a wonderful day. Our baby was extremely badly behaved and stood on its head the entire time – making it very difficult for the sonographer to get the measurements she needed.

So I was sent off for a long walk, a drink and some chocolate (I don’t need telling twice.)

Despite my best efforts with the sugar, and two embarrassing sets of star jumps in front of the medical staff, baby was still floating on it’s head – but in the end they managed to get what they needed.

At lunch with my husband Jay after the appointment I was finally able to feel happy – really, really happy.

Despite having had a six and an eight-week scan I hadn’t allowed myself to properly embrace or celebrate our news.

I think when you’ve suffered miscarriage and complications in the past it’s very hard to not think the worst in early pregnancy.

But now we’ve had a healthy 12 week scan I’m going to do my very best to enjoy and embrace every second of the next six months. Remind me of this when I’m moaning about sleepless nights and not being able to put my shoes on!

I’ll be keeping you up to date with all things pregnancy over the coming months – but for now – here is our pregnancy reveal video, and a few photos.
