Staying safe on the internet

by Lauren Abbott

Children learned how to stay safe online during lessons hosted by Kent Police.

More than 70 primary school students from across the county took part in the workshops, which taught the youngsters about cyber bullying, reporting abuse, and what not to share on the internet.

The event, held in partnership with Kent County Council and the NSPCC, took place at the Kent Police College in Coverdale Avenue, Maidstone, on Tuesday to coincide with Safer Internet Day.

Digital leaders were also appointed among the Year 5 and 6s, with the aim that they can share the lessons they had learned with friends and classmates.

Sgt Julie Albone, who organised the event, said: “The internet is a great resource for fun and learning but it can also be dangerous if used inappropriately.

“It’s really important that children know how to report concerns or online abuse. It is crucial that young people know where they can go for support and how to report concerns if they see something they are not comfortable with.

“When my team visit schools it is clear many children at this age are using social media sites aimed at much older youngsters and that is a cause of concern. That is why it is so important we do all we can to get the safety messages across.”
