Closing down sales have begun at Mothercare stores and online but some of the first shoppers to arrive in Kent have been left disappointed.

Branches in Canterbury, Bluewater and Orpington, which specialise in prams, car seats, toys, and maternity and baby clothes, are all set to shut with the retailer advertising a 'massive' closing down sale starting today (Friday, November 8).

Mothercare says many items will be "dramatically reduced, just in time for Christmas" with shop stock levels also high as warehouses are emptied.

But some of the first shoppers to arrive at the Canterbury store in Wincheap came away disappointed.

Mum-of-two Shelley Andrews had driven about 15 miles to reach the store with her mum and baby.

She said: "I saw it on Facebook this morning that there was going to be a sale, so we've driven all the way from the other side of Sellindge to find that there's absolutely nothing.

"I'm really quite annoyed that I've wasted my time. If they're going to do something, they should really do it."

The retailer, which has been a staple on the high street since 1961, has already closed 60 branches nationwide.

It has now gone into administration, and earlier this week announced it will close all of its remaining UK stores in coming weeks and months.

The Mothercare website will remain running until further notice, and discounts will also be available online.

Any product warranties or guarantees will remain valid and customers are encouraged to spend any gift cards as soon as possible.
