While the likes of Olivia, Amelia and Jack have long dominated the top spots in baby name lists if the latest predictions for 2016 are to be believed it could leave them a long way down in the popularity stakes.

Baby Centre UK has released its 2016 predictions and they may make for interesting reading.

In the pink corner, Emi, Nora and Astrid take the top spots in the baby website’s crystal ball, while Hector, Atticus and Aspen take the first three places among the boys.

Some of 2016's popular names may take you by surprise

It is thought that Harper Lee’s Go Set A Watchman has reignited interest in the name Atticus while Lena Dunham’s popular series Girls has had an influence in the girls line-up with Marni, the name of the main character in the show, appearing in next year’s list for the first time.

And while names more commonly associated with earlier generations have been making a gradual comeback there are some notable increases in those once coined as ‘old fashioned’ in next year’s rundown.

Percy, Dottie and Queenie are among the list of 30 popular names for girls while Herbert, Percy and Stan are flying the flag for the boys.

According to the site the list was compiled through the combination of a poll and a more scientific look at its data.
