Top baby names in England and Wales 2016

Olivia has replaced Amelia as the most popular baby name for girls.

According to the latest information from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Olivia has now reclaimed the top spot it held between 2009 and 2010.

Results have been based on names given and recorded by parents on children's birth certificates in 2016.

Oliver continues to be the most popular first name given to baby boys in England and Wales - holding onto the top spot since 2013.

There were six new entries in the top 100 most popular boys names - Albie, Arlo, Ezra, Finn, Jasper and Jesse.

There were four new entries in the top 100 most popular girls’ names in 2016 which were Felicity, Iris, Luna and Lydia while Harper climbed the rankings most rapidly.

Nick Stripe from the ONS said: "With over 696,000 babies born in England and Wales in 2016, and nearly 64,000 different names chosen for them, it's interesting how relatively stable the top 10 names have been over recent years.

"It is as you move down the rankings that you begin to notice social and cultural changes being reflected in name choices. Harper was the girls’ name in the top 100 in 2016 with the biggest rise in popularity over the previous 10 years, whilst for boys it was Jaxon.”
