Whitstable gears up for popular lantern-lit parade as part of town’s WhitSparkle Christmas celebrations
A bright and seasonal tradition returns this weekend to light up the town for its annual lantern parade and Christmas lights switch-on.
Families have been invited to join the festivities in Whitstable by crafting their own glowing creations for the WhitSparkle event on Saturday afternoon.
A children’s lantern-making workshop will be held at the South Quay Shed at the town’s harbour from 1pm to 3pm, costing £3 per child to cover the cost of materials.
Organisers say the session aims to inspire creativity while giving youngsters the chance to build a lantern to carry proudly in the evening parade.
The WhitSparkle celebration, run entirely by volunteers, has become a much-loved event in the town’s calendar.
This year’s programme includes performances at the harbour from 1pm, mulled wine for visitors, and activities leading up to the big procession.
The Christmas tree lights switch-on and parade will begin at 4.30pm, with crowds expected to line the streets to watch the colourful procession wind its way through the town.
Residents are advised that Whitstable High Street and surrounding roads will be closed from 4pm to 6pm to ensure the parade can pass safely.
WhitSparkle organisers say the event is made possible only through community donations and are encouraging locals to support the celebration.
Olivia Thomas, one of the event’s organising committee, said: “Whitstable's Christmas season kicks off on Saturday with the lantern-lit parade and harbour event.
“You can expect an even bigger crowd this year, big Sam the giant dressed as Santa, and lots of local community groups are joining in with lantern creations and sparkly costumes.
“There will be performances in the harbour throughout the course of the afternoon, from choirs, solo singers to kids’ performances, all bringing festive cheer.
“We expect Mr and Mrs Christmas to join us to turn on the Christmas tree lights at 4.30pm.
“From there, everyone is invited to parade through the town and back to either St Alphege Church for carols or in the town and harbour for more festive cheer.”
A QR code shared on event posters dotted around the town and on the WhitSparkle Facebook page allows residents to contribute to help fund the displays and activities.
