Whitstable Carnival parade confirmed for 2025 as theme to honour Star Wars and Dracula actor Peter Cushing
Organisers behind a town’s historic carnival parade have revealed the theme for this year’s event is a legendary former resident.
Inspired by actor Peter Cushing - who starred in Doctor Who, Frankenstein and Star Wars during his long on-screen career - Whitstable Carnival is back for its 128th year.
Returning to the town on its traditional slot on the first Saturday in August, the festivities will celebrate Mr Cushing, who lived in the town for 35 years until his death in 1994.
But volunteers behind the annual event, which attracts thousands of visitors, are pleading for extra help to keep the show on the road in the years to come.
Aurelia de Rocha, chairperson of the Whitstable Carnival Association, said: “Whitstable Carnival doesn’t just happen. There’s no fairy godmother waving a wand, no magical seagulls swooping in to organise it.
“It’s the result of a small but mighty team of volunteers who pour their time, energy, and love into making it a highlight of the year. But here’s the thing - we need more hands on deck.
“The carnival isn’t just about floats and costumes, it’s about community. It’s a celebration of everything that makes Whitstable special, from our creativity to our sense of togetherness.
“But without volunteers, there’s no carnival.
“Right now, our team is tiny. We’re talking about a handful of people juggling work, family, and life while trying to plan an event that thousands enjoy. We love what we do, but we can’t do it alone.”
She says the team requires a couple of hours a week either promoting on social media, organising or painting banners, someone with expertise in managing websites and a new secretary.
The event also requires help on the day, such as marshalling and helping with fundraising.
Aurelia added: “The reality is that without enough volunteers, the carnival won’t happen. It’s that simple.
“Whitstable Carnival has been a cherished tradition for 128 years, and if we want to keep it going, we need more people to step up.”
Carnival day for 2025 will take place on Saturday, August 2.
Schools in the town have been invited to produce their own posters celebrating Mr Cushing which could either be a portrait or a caricature of his face.
Anyone interested in taking part in the parade can sign up via the forms on the carnival’s website - whitstablecarnival.co.uk
