Dover Castle and Walmer Castle reopened by English Heritage from Saturday, July 4

Two of Kent's biggest English Heritage attractions are once again opening their gates to visitors.

Dover Castle and and Walmer Castle let down the drawbridges for the first time on Saturday (July 4) after months of closure because of coronavirus.

English Heritage has introduced limits on visitor numbers at both attractions in order to allow for social distancing and all families wishing to visit, including members, must pre-book a date and specific time to arrive.

At Dover Castle all grounds and wide open spaces are open for visitors. The inside of the Great Tower is also open with a one way system to guide people safely round as is The Keep Yard and Arthur's Hall exhibition space.

The secret wartime tunnels and medieval tunnels remain closed at Dover Castle but on weekends from July 18, say English Heritage, there are plans to bring the castle's Second World War stories to life in the open air.

Cafes at two locations are open selling snacks, treats and hot drinks to take away and the The Great Tower gift shop will also have a one-way system in place.

And alongside castle toilets will be additional hand sanitising stations across Dover Castle's site.

Along the coast at Walmer Castle the formal gardens, meadow and woodland walk will all be open from July 4 with a new one-way route in place. But due to its narrow paths the Glen is closed but can be seen from the viewing platform above.

The castle itself and all rooms will remain shut as will the play trail for children but The Glasshouse Cafe will reopen for takeaway service.

Neighbouring Deal Castle currently remains closed but plans are in place to open it in early August.
