Kent blog for families

by Lauren Abbott

I’ve had a few encounters with fame in my life...

There was the time I made it into the Boots catalogue for winning a Mother’s Day caption competition having proudly declared in 12 words or less ‘My mum loves me even though I gave her chicken pox.’

When I was eight I was given a place on a Royal Ballet summer school and appeared in a promotional video for the world famous company. I say me – one satin ballet shoe, the top of my head and three fingers made their proud dancing debut.

And for the last 12 years I’ve had my byline dotted in newspapers, on the internet, in magazines and mentioned on radio as part of my career as a journalist.

But in 2011 I also became a mum – my husband and I first-time parents – and we started to look at Kent in a completely different light as a place to raise our family, educate our child (now children) and amuse us all with fun and interesting things to do.

So five years on and this time around we’re all about to embrace our five minutes of fame as part of new blog Our Kent Family.

My Kent Family has loads of ideas for things to do with your kids

As we – the children now aged four and two included – attempt to document some of our most favourite adventures in Kent and give an insight into the most fun, economical, adventurous, unusual and unique experiences the county has to offer families like ours.

From making masks to making memories.

Although whether the children take on their own media persona remains to be seen because, while I have a choice about my byline, I’m grappling with how best to identify them without defining their online life - for them and forever more - in our own corner of cyberspace.

But while hoping to give you a glimpse into our life in Kent we are also keen to share suggestions from you and your families of things worth seeing, visiting or taking part in perhaps not just here but also in London, surrounding counties, or even countries with France very much on our doorstep!

And while embarking on a new career as a Garden of England guinea pig is not likely to see me revive my role as a Boots caption writer or world famous ballet dancer I hope it will be a fun way of not only documenting our family life but also enabling you to share yours too.
