Shorne playpark opens in time for school summer holidays

A new playpark has opened just in time for the summer holidays.

A second-hand toddler swing and slide acquired more than 25 years ago for youngsters in Shorne have been replaced with swings, a slide and a seesaw suitable for a much wider age range.

It was officially opened by Gravesham Mayor Cllr Lyn Milner, and Cllr Bob Lane, who is chairman of Shorne Parish Council which is behind the project.

The opening ceremony, attended by more than 80 guests, was the culmination of nine months’ hard work in consulting with residents and securing funds and donations.

Cllr Lane, who is also Gravesham Borough Councillor for Shorne, Cobham and Luddesdown Ward, said: “We are very pleased with the new play equipment.

"The old, much-loved play equipment only appealed to toddlers, and we have ensured that the new equipment appeals to a wider age-range.

"I’d like to thank Gravesham council, Kent County Council, Veolia Environmental Trust, and residents for their generous donations towards the cost of the new equipment.”

Kent County Councillor Bryan Sweetland, cabinet member for people and partnerships, said: “I am pleased to have been able to sponsor a grant from my member’s grant fund on behalf of Kent County Council. This is a much-needed facility for the residents of Shorne.”

Local resident Debbie Fish, whose granddaughter Lily presented a posy to the Mayor, said: “It looks absolutely amazing.

"It was lovely to see so many at the opening, especially the excited little ones. My granddaughter, nieces, and nephews will have so much enjoyment meeting other children enjoying the area too. Thank you so much to all involved.”
