RSPCA launches virtual pet shows in June for owners and animals at home

Has your family got a handsome hamster or a devoted dog?

The RSPCA is seeking out special pets and their owners for a series of virtual pet shows being hotly contested online.

The events - part of the charity's One Fun Day - will be a chance to showcase the work of the RSPCA and raise much needed funds to support its causes.

Any pet, whether furry, feathered or scaly, can take part in one of 30 shows being run online across England and Wales and there's no geographical limitation as to which owners choose to enter.

Twelve finalists will then be chosen to compete in a grand final, which will be streamed live.

The pet show will be held alongside a packed programme of virtual events including live Q&As with an RSPCA inspector, a dog treat baking masterclass with DJ and radio presenter Kate Lawler and a chat about small furries with CBBC’s Rory the vet.

The virtual fundraising, says the charity, reflects the way in which charities are having to 'think outside the box' to raise desperately needed funds.

RSPCA chief executive Chris Sherwood said: “This is a really exciting event and we’re thrilled to be able to find different ways to get people involved with us and showcase the amazing work of our branches and centres.

"We’re all living in different times and charities like us have been really badly affected. Our fundraising income has been hit hard but at the same time there are as many animals as ever who need our help so we’ve had to be even more creative when coming up with ways for people to support our vital work.

“This event will bring some much-needed light relief, with great fun interactive events, some adorable pets and a chance to raise money for animals in need. I’m really looking forward to seeing all the finalists although I already know it’s going to be tough to pick a winner!”

The events will culminate with a day of events on June 14

Classes cost £2 per entry and the pet shows are not being judged on looks but instead will celebrate pets' happiness, health, behaviour and bonds with their owners.

Amongst the categories are Best Rescue, Best Trick, Best Friends for two or more animals who are inseparable, Peas in a Pod for pets who look like their owners and Animal Artwork where owners can display their best doodles of the animals they live with.

The heats are taking place right up until June 14 and owners can find those they would most like to join by visiting www.rspca.org.uk/onefunday
