Family days out Kent: Things to do in with the kids this weekend
As the days get longer and nights gradually get shorter there is a lot more to do in the county.
And with the January blues almost out of the way, there could be no better time than to think about what to do at the weekend.
Here are some ideas on what to do with the kids this weekend.
1. Winter Model Railway Show, Teynham Village Hall, Belle Friday Close
Sunday, January 28
A chance to see large scale railway modelling in action, the Kent Area Group of the G Scale Society stages this show featuring five large scale model tracks with both electric and live steam power. Kent Garden Railways will also be there with a secondhand stall, and refreshments will be on offer. It runs from 11am to 4pm, and costs £2.50 and £1 for children. There will be parking available. For more details go to gscalekent.co.uk.
2. Aladdin, Stag Theatre, Sevenoaks
Friday, January 26, until Sunday, January 28
It may not feel like panto time, but there’s a cast of more than 90 and a live band at the Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks who might disagree, as they stage their production of Aladdin this weekend. You’ll be dancing in the aisles and exercising those ribs as there’s laughs aplenty in the show presented by Sevenoaks Entertainers. Tickets cost £13. For more details visit sevenoaksentertainers.co.uk
3. Walk, explore and play, Cobtree Park, Aylesford
Every day
The 50-acre park, which was once home to Maidstone Zoo, has a zoo-themed play area, plenty of space for picnics – if it’s not too chilly – and a cafe serving food and drink.
The former Elephant House is now home to the Cobtree Men’s Shed, but male and female, old or young, are all welcome to pop by, and there’s a sculpture trail around the site. For grown-ups wanting to blow away some cobwebs, there’s also a 5K signed route by Run England. It costs £1.50 a day to park. Visit cobtreemanorpark.co.uk for details.
4. RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch
Saturday, January 27, until Monday, January 29
The last weekend of January sees the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch get underway and the conservation charity is asking everyone to share details of the birds that live around them. Sightings from previous years helped identify the dramatic decline of house sparrows, leading to urgent studies to try to save the species from catastrophic failure. But the survey is not all doom and gloom and it can even help participants relax and de-stress. For more click here.
5. Eagle Heights Bird of Prey Centrewinter opening
Every weekend until the end of February
From 11am unti 4pm members of the public are invited to go along to the centre's winter opening. The last admission is at 2pm and there will be flying displays taking place at 12pm and 3pm. For more information log onto www.eagleheights.co.uk
6. Meet the animals, Wildwood, near Herne
Every day
With the winter opening hours of 10am until 3pm every child's dream can come true as they are invited to meet the animals at the Wildwood animal park that's nor far from Herne Bay. For more information click here.
7. Baby and children's market, Parkwood Community Centre, Parkwood Green, Rainham
Sunday, January 28
Pick up lots of pre-owned baby and children’s items and browse and buy products all under one roof at the market on Sunday, January 28 between 10am and noon. There may also be bargains to be had with discounts on well known brands. Entry is £1.
