Top Christmas presents for new babies: The Charlie O'Brien Blog

by Charlie O'Brien

As all the festive adverts are now on TV I felt it was socially acceptable to start talking about Christmas on the My Kent Family blog!

I have an 11-week-old baby daughter and have been racking my brain about what to get her. We won’t be going mad, but think it’s important for her older brother that Father Christmas doesn’t forget her!

But in reality, babies don’t need much and it can be hard to buy for them – so if you’re stuck too, here are 10 ideas I’ve come up with...

Every baby is going to need a high chair
Every baby is going to need a high chair

1. High chair. It sounds incredibly dull but if your baby is under six months you’ve still got the weaning journey ahead of you! One thing they’ll definitely need is a suitable high chair before they start eating solid food.

2.A jumperoo or activity station. Once babies get to about four months they need a bit of entertainment. I found the jumperoo to be a life saver with our son. He loved jumping and it gave me 10 minutes to tidy/work/have a cuppa! Equally activity stations they can pull themselves up on as they learn to stand, are fabulous.

3.Personalised toy box. As they get older you’ll start to accumulate more and more toys. Loads of companies are now doing gorgeous personalised storage boxes.

4. A photo album or memory box. I’m always adding to our memory boxes as the months roll by. It would be a lovely Christmas gift that they can look back on in years to come.

5. Classic books. I LOVE books and reading a bedtime story. A great gift idea is a classic book like Winnie the Poo or Beatrix Potter.

6. Toys they can grab and chew. Smaller, more affordable toys are a great idea for a first Christmas. Things like Sophie Le Giraffe and the Oball ball are always winners.

7. A walker.Push along walkers are great for when they start to really find their feet. Even if they’re no where near walking yet, it’s nice to have one ready.

8. A basket of sensory play items. Babies love nothing more than crinkly paper, bright coloured bits of material and home made shakers. One of my son’s favourite items was a bottle filled with dried pasta and jellybeans!

9. Clothes. You literally can never have enough!

10. Money into a savings account. If you don’t like the idea of lots of bright coloured plastic in your house, why not ask friends and relatives to put some money into your child’s savings account for when they’re older?

I’d love to know your ideas for Christmas gifts for young babies!
