Top baby names revealed in latest nationwide list

Amelia and Oliver were the most popular names given to babies born last year in England and Wales according to the latest list from the Office of National Statistics.

Amelia remains at the top spot, where she has been since 2011 while Oliver has remained king since 2013.

Last year's bundle of new arrivals also brought with them some new entries into the top 10 with Ella and Mia now replacing Lily and Sophie among the most popular girls' names for 2015.

Noah replaced James in the top 10 boys’ names for England and Wales in 2015, compared with 2014.

Elizabeth McLaren, from the ONT, said: "Amelia and Oliver remained the most popular names for baby girls and baby boys born in 2015. Ella was last in the top 10 in 2007 and Noah entered the top 10 for the first time on record in 2015."

The baby name statistics, released every year are compiled from first names recorded when births are registered in England and Wales.

In the top 100 of baby names in 2015 there were four new entries for boys: Jaxon, Roman, Reggie and Carter, replacing Owen, Robert, Joey and Finlay which were in the top 100 in 2014.

There were six new entries in the top 100 most popular girls’ names in 2015: Penelope, Mila, Clara, Arabella, Maddison and Aria.

And these have replaced Lydia, Faith, Mollie, Brooke, Isabel and Amy.

In 2015, there were 697,852 live births in England and Wales, with over 27,000 different boys’ names and over 35,000 different girls’ names registered. The top 100 boys’ names accounted for 52% of all baby boys born in 2015, while the top 100 girls’ names accounted for 43% of all baby girls born in 2015.
